A Note From The Teacher’s Desk…
I hope everyone stayed warm this week! It was definitely a cold one! BRRR! I thought I would share a few reminders…
-Please make sure your child’s name/initials are on their outdoor items AND classroom sweaters/sweatshirts
-If you are unable to make your scheduled volunteer time please let me know ASAP so I can plan accordingly
-If you child doesn’t know how to tie their shoes and/or zipper their coat we would greatly appreciate you practicing at home
Have a great weekend!
A Sneak Peek At Our Week
Students wrote an autobiography this week to accompany a cut-out of their silhouette. They used a web graphic to organize their thoughts before transferring those ideas into sentences with SWAG the following day. Students also wrote about their weekend and a topic of their choice.
We learned about the sounds for /u/, /x/ and /z/ using our regular routine. Students built words in the –ub and –un word family. We used some of the words from those lists to practice ABC order. We also introduced king of –ing. After reading a mini book about the sound, we generated a class list of –ing words. We ended the week with making crowns to show off what we learned about the king of –ing.
From our reading unit we read the selection Bear Shadow. The students really seemed to enjoy this silly story. Even better is they were able to take the information we learned from our non-fiction selections about shadows and use it to explain the events in the story.
In light of the upcoming holiday weekend, we spent some time learning about Martin Luther King Jr. After reviewing what a biography is, we read about the life of MLK. We discussed his importance and created a character trait poster to describe him. We did a neat activity with a brown and white egg to demonstrate that even though people may look different on the outside we are all the same on the inside. We also did a ‘then’ and ‘now’ sort to show how times have changed thanks to his determination and hard work. We discussed some themed vocabulary words (i.e. peace, equality, love, friendship, kindness). We shared how we can support Martin Luther King’s dream and finished up with a peaceful/not peaceful sort activity. Ask them to share a fact they learned!
We are continuing to work on ALWAYS using our neatest, nicest handwriting. This week we practiced upper and lowercase Ii-Rr. Keep practicing at home!
In math, we spent the beginning of the week practicing missing addend. This always proves to be a tricky concept…but we are working on learning different strategies to solve these problems. Later in the week we introduced subtraction. Our friend Linus The Minus shared his concept rhyme to help us understand the action of subtraction. We did a fun-filled activities to model taking away using the books Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons and 8 Little Monkeys.
We talked about animals in winter. We read Over and Under the Snow and completed a migrate/adapt/hibernate sort.
