What’s Happening In Whoville?

I enjoyed getting to share with parents what a day in first grade is like. As always, if you have any questions or concerns feel free to contact me.

Our volunteer link is up and working on our classnotes page. Click on the link to the right that says “sign up”!

Now for an update on what we have been busy doing…

Reading: We read a story called “Back to School” and got to see how children learn all around the world. We compared things that were the same and different. We read “Johnny Appleseed” to kick off our learning of apples. We also read and illustrated our Apples poem.

Math: In Math we continued working with ten frames and subitizing numbers. We are continuing to practice the many ways to show a number.

Writing: Learning that we are all writers, what writers write about, and what writers do. Working our handwriting books to improve penmebship.

Phonics: sounds /s/, /m/, /a/, and /t/. Listening for beginning and ending sounds. Identifying tricky words.

—Please make sure when your child is ready to take their AR test that you initial next to the book so we know that you feel your child is ready. They must read their book 3X before testing (unless they are on chapter books).

Reminder: Homework packets (along with spelling and IXL) is starting this week! Our first spelling test will be next Friday 9/16.

For our apple unit we are asking that each student bring in 1-2 apples on Wednesday 9/14…Thank you in advance!

Reading: We continued our Kevin Henkes Unit and read Chester’s Way Julius Baby of the World, and Kitten’s First Full Moon. We identified character traits and focused on how they changed throughout the story. We also worked on our comprehension.

Math: In Math we graphed our favorite Kevin Henkes book. We also learned and reviewed the ways to represent a number.

Writing: Students wrote about their favorite Kevin Henkes book.

Phonics: Continued reviewing sounds and writing letters properly up through the letter Z. We practiced rhyming, segmenting and blending of words. Next week we will dive into our 1st Unit.

All students should have been to the library to get an AR book, please be on the lookout for their RED AR folder. Please make sure when your child is ready to take their AR test that you initial next to the book so we know that you feel your child is ready. What’s Happening in Whoville?

We are still enjoying getting to know all of our new friends in first grade by sharing our summer journals, our all about me bags, and our name sheet.

Now for an update on what we have been busy doing…

Reading: We learned about our first author for our author study…Kevin Henkes! We read Chrysanthemum, Wemberly Worried, Lily’s Purple Plastic Purse, and Owen by Kevin Henkes. We focused on Character traits (how a character acts or feels) as we read and also how a character changes throughout a story. We will continue our author study with more books by Kevin Henkes next week.

Math: In Math we continued with some graphing and started investigating number lines

Phonics: Continued reviewing sounds and writing letters properly up through the letter P. We practiced rhyming, segmenting and blending of words.
