We are a Nut Free Classroom!  Please keep that in mind when packing daily snacks and planning birthday treats.

Our guiding theme throughout this school year will be ‘Systems’.  Systems are organized structures that consist of interrelated and interdependent parts.  Some systems that we will explore include cultures, mathematics, communities, the earth and its materials, etc.

Dear Families…We are off to a great start to the school year.  This week we jumped right into content.  The students are adjusting well and we are working on building our Classroom Community of Learners.

In ELA we are engaged in our Read Aloud, The City of Ember.  We have focused on Character Development, Setting and the Community of Ember.  Today we began a literature circle using other stories that have a common theme of Community.  Students will use the same focus of Character Development, Setting and the Community.  We will continue with these stories over the next few weeks.  Next week we will start a unit on Narrative Writing.  The students will go through the Writing Process as we develop our writing pieces.

In Math we are starting our first unit.  This unit focuses on Place Value, Number Sense and Operations.  Earlier this week I sent home a parent information pack that explains the content and standards that will be addressed in this unit.

For theme we are working in our Social Studies textbook.  The first chapter is titled, where in the world is our community?  The students are creating a Zooming in Book that starts with the continents and oceans.  It will then move into North America, the United States, and then into Delaware.  It is a good idea to start asking your child to review with you the seven continents, four oceans, the equator, prime meridian, etc… A good question to ask would be how could you describe where you live?

A few dates to remember:

September 3rd is Picture Day.  We will also be previewing the book fair that day.

September 8th is Literacy Day.  Students can dress as their favorite book character or decorate a t-shirt to represent their favorite book.  There will also be a book swap that day.  Please review Ms. Howarth’s email with more information for this day.

Thank you in advance for your support during the school year![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_btn title=”VIEW GRADE ON HOME ACCESS” style=”modern” shape=”rounded” color=”primary” size=”md” align=”center” i_align=”left” i_type=”fontawesome” i_icon_fontawesome=”fa fa-adjust” i_icon_openiconic=”vc-oi vc-oi-dial” i_icon_typicons=”typcn typcn-adjust-brightness” i_icon_entypo=”entypo-icon entypo-icon-note” i_icon_linecons=”vc_li vc_li-heart” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fhac.doe.k12.de.us%2FHomeAccess%2FAccount%2FLogOn%3FReturnUrl%3D%252fhomeaccess%252f|title:HOME%20ACCESS|target:%20_blank” button_block=”” add_icon=”” i_icon_pixelicons=”vc_pixel_icon vc_pixel_icon-alert”][vc_column_text]
